JAINITUOS ANIME REVIEWS – EDENS ZERO – MY OWN IMPRESSIONS

Edens Zero

Genre: Sci-Fi, Comedy, Fantasy

Studio: J.C.Staff

Hello my friends.

Welcome to another entry of my blog.

Today, I want to talk about one series, distributed by Netflix, at least on the Latin American version, that I started watching, but I definitely grew up to love, as much as I grew up loving Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man this 2021, two already great stories. And trust me, do not get surprised if, after I finish my review, I will go back and don’t sleep just to finish it.

The title obviously speaks for itself. Yet. I will say it once more.

Here you have:

But before I start with my review, I must ask you the important question:

Are you guys ok? Feeling healthy?

If the answer is yes, then I am very happy.

Anyway, let’s start the most «spacetacular» side of the MashimaVerse… This is Edens Zero.

PREMISE

Edens Zero is a sequel of Fairy Tail, taking place almost a million years after the end of the adventures of Natsu and company. Now humankind has evolved in the biggest technology, dragons still exist, but now they are robotic ones, helping adventurers to travel into space, and…

It’s just a prank, bro.

Seriously, sometimes I felt like that. I will explain it later. Ok. Jokers apart.

Edens Zero takes place in a universe, the Sakura Cosmos, where adventurers travel around many planets, and possess very advanced technology beyond our imagination, with some elements of fantasy. Most of this technology is propelled by the Ether, which is like a mixture between the Force and every fuel that adventurers can imagine. Also, there is an alternate version of YouTube, called B-Cube.

Oh! And the Cosmos is always at the watch of Mother, the creator of the universe.

Shiki Granbell is an orphan who has lived all his life on Planet Granbell, an abandoned theme park full of robots whom he considers his friends and family. He dreams with making many friends, inspired by the words of his grandfather, the Demon King Ziggy. One day, two adventurers and B-Cubers, Rebecca Bluegarden, and her companion, Happy, arrive to Granbell, and they meet Shiki, who wants to befriend them, with little success… at the beginning.

But, after an unfortunate rebellion from the robots of Granbell, Shiki is forced to escape with Rebecca and Happy. After the bittersweet escape (Trust me, that is the best way to describe it), the three embark in an adventure to find Mother, after finding a gigantic warship, the Edens Zero, who Shiki inherited from his grandfather.

Wow!!! Such big paragraphs! But that proves the amazing world development that Hiro Mashima creates for his work, even from Rave Master.

Mashima started publishing Edens Zero in 2018, shortly after the conclusion of Fairy Tail, and as of August 30th, 2021, it comprises 16 volumes. The first episode broadcasted on April. Furthermore, the composer of the soundtrack is Yoshihisa Hirano, very famous for Death Note and Hunter x Hunter 2011.

Finally, Netflix acquired streaming rights of Edens Zero, and was released on August 26, 2021.

STORY

Ok. For those who haven’t read my previous entries, I have stated that Netflix has always had a very complicated relationship with anime, mainly for two reasons.

  1. Netflix keep calling anime for media that CLEARLY ISN’T.
  2. They bastardise many classic anime stories. i.e.

Death Note and Cowboy Bebop.

Personally, I don’t care how much Daniella Pineda mocks the fandom, she looks generic and uninspired as Faye Valentine, and my hype about this live-action is as dead as the previous friendship between Spike and Vicious.

My point is that, after those bittersweet news, watching Edens Zero was absolutely refreshing.

The first episode is definitely one of the best I have seen in years. Indeed the encounter between Rebecca, Shiki and Happy was pretty rocky, but then all of them became good friends during the events of Granbell, and before that, we got a good introduction to our protagonists, especially Shiki. In addition, the first episode has probably one of the best plot twists I have seen in my life, from my viewpoint. Trust me, the last time I felt so shaken by a plot twist was with The Sixth Sense and The Village (Believe it or not!)

Then, the second episode develops more the world, as well as the past between Rebecca and Happy, and I really liked it. Again, it felt organic, touching and complete. In short time, our protagonists are well-established, and we want to know them more and more. Better still, you feel that you already know the Sakura Cosmos in a way, to the point of living there for years. But that’s because the setting and the characters are so well introduced.

No wonder Hiro Mashima and Fairy Tail are so popular, he knows how to made a good first impression. And he is not the only one. I believe both Tatsuki Fujimoto and Nakaba Suzuki have their talent on narrative.

They also know how to make a first nice impression.

On the other hand, the animation is beautiful. Well. What else can you expect from J.C. Staff?

Who else could make Wiene such a cuteness? Tomorrow, I will have diabetes.

And, unlike High-Rise invasion, the fanservice was ok. Thankfully it is not gratuitous, it is beautifully for comedic purposes. Perhaps for a potential second season of High-Rise, they will take note of how fanservice should be used.

Finally, the constant references to both Rave Master and Fairy Tail cracked me a laugh! Remember my fake synopsis of Edens Zero? Well, look at this shot.

So many Fairy Tail references that… I don’t even know where to start!!

CHARACTERS

And just like with Fairy Tail and Rave Master, the characters of Edens Zero are pretty original, and you love them from episode one. Shiki’s motivation is pretty relatable and you will find his enthusiasm and passion so contagious, while you might be excited to find that Rebecca is more badass than you think.

But sometimes I can’t stop confusing Rebecca with Lucy Heartfilia.

And what about Happy?

I think it is pretty obvious that the left one is from Fairy Tail, and the right one from Edens Zero.

Finally, we got this weird, white, horned-nosed… dog with different names. Plue on Rave Master, Nikora in Edens Zero, and… both names on Fairy Tail.

I swear it!!! All of these versions come Edens Zero, Rave Master and Fairy Tail. It’s like the avatar of Hiro Mashima.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I find it weird.

And finally, there is one more character that got my attention, one that, up to this point, I am being as an antagonist, and that one is…

Elsie Crimson, the Armored Space Pirate.

In Edens Zero, Elsie is the captain of the Skull Fairy, and a former princess that change her career. But they don’t fool me. She is clearly Erza Scarlet with an eyepatch and a space pirate outfit.

She is your twin sister. What do you think… Elsie?

Ok!! She is clearly not very happy with the comparison

But hey. To sum up, the characters on Edens Zero are worthy.

CONCLUSION

Edens Zero is pretty entertaining, again, I enjoyed every episode I watch. Probably not as good as Fairy Tail, but another great series from Hiro Mashima. If you like Fairy Tail or Rave Master, you will definitley enjoy, Edens Zero.

I highly recommended it, especially for those who think that all you see in Netflix is crap.

So yeah. Take a look to Edens Zero.

Well… I finished. I am tired. It took me ages to write this entry. Sorry guys, I will end up here. See ya next time, and thanks for reading me…

No. Make a joke.

No Erza… I mean Elsie. I said I am tired, and I am going to bed.

MAKE A JOKE! YOU ARE NOT LEAVING YET!

Ok. Ok. Uh… Uh…

What did a Plue said to a Happy?

«If your name is Happy. Why are you so Blue?»

You girls like it?
