JAINITUOS ANIME REVIEWS – BLEACH – MY OWN REFLECTIONS

BLEACH

Genre: Adventure, Supernatural

Studio: Pierrot

Hello my friends.

I am still working on the Part II of my Own Reflections of this fantastic anime that means so much for me, for I enjoyed it in during some of my best years – Inuyasha. I am still eager to watch the first episode of:

Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon

But, due to chance, I was checking the catalog of Crunchyroll, and then I saw that another sweet story was released, and that story is…

BURN THE WITCH

So, then, I decided to take a little break from everything related to Inuyasha, and give some time to another of those anime that absolutely had an impact on me, unlike any other, except for Inuyasha. And again, the title says it all.

For me, talking about Bleach is like talking about many elements that helped me shape my vision about narrative and character development. I know it sounds very odd coming from a shonen anime, but I am looking forward to explain this feeling in the following entry.

And of course, it comes then the typical questions:

Are you guys feeling ok? Healthy and happy?

If the answer is yes, then I am happy. Now, into the review.

PREMISE

Based on the beautiful manga written and illustrated by Tite Kubo, Bleach tells the story of Ichigo Kurosaki, a 15-year-old high schooler that, since he was a child, has the special ability to see ghosts and spirits; one day, he meets a very strange-looking girl wearing miko clothes, called Rukia Kuchiki, who claims to be a Shinigami and hunts evil spirits that can kill humans, known as Hollow. Shortly after their encounter, Rukia and Ichigo are forced to fight one of these Hollows; and despite winning, Ichigo «steals» Rukia’s Shinigami Force, something that makes him a Substitute Shinigami and hunts Hollows.

That leads him to know the Soul Society and meet many fascinating characters, both Shinigamis and Hollows, along with other Human World residents, including Orihime Inoue, Yasutora «Chad» Sado, and the Quincy, Uryu Ishida; all of them with their own powers and personalities.

Kubo published Bleach from August 7, 2001 to August 22, 2016; shortly, he started publishing Burn The Witch, as some spin-off of Bleach, first as a one-shot manga, and then as a mainstream work. Furthermore, Studio Pierrot animates Bleach. I must confess that when I discovered this last fact, I was surprised. I simply couldn’t believe that Pierrot was the one behind Bleach, but some time after watching both Naruto and Black Clover, I finally convinced myself about that fact.

Finally, Shiro Sagisu composes the soundtrack. Do you know what other anime he composed? Neon Genesis Evangelion. Of course. That’s why I spent hours listening to the soundtrack.

STORY

Before I start, there is a funny trivia about Bleach. At the beginning, Weekly Shonen Jump rejected Bleach, because its plot has some similarities with Yu Yu Hakusho, so Tite Kubo desisted of his idea, but after receiving a letter from Akira Toriyama, praising his work, Kubo tried again and again, until Bleach was finally published.

As a whole, and for those Bleach fans, the manga has many story arcs, including The Substitute Arc; Soul Society Entry Arc, Soul Society Rescue Arc, The Arrancar Arc; The Thousand-Year War arc among others. Of course I am not going to talk about all of these arcs, because it will take time, and, unfortunately, Bleach has the same problem as Naruto, it has so many unnecessary filler arcs.

But despite this gigantic flaw, Bleach, as a story, has an impressive quality; it is constantly developing. What do you mean by this? Simple. Every new arc expands everything the previous one established in terms of story and characters. Of course, except for some fillers. During the first arc, after the encounter between Ichigo and Rukia, Bleach takes good care of his narrative, mixing world-building, character development, with some of the best fights scenes in anime, probably not as flamboyant as Gurren Lagann, or as psychologically intense as in Death Note, but they are well choreographed, and have a lot of substance. What do I mean by this? That the emotions of the characters are present in many of the fights, and sometimes, like in the Arrancar Arc, these fights are symbol of a previous tragedy that one of our characters must face once and for all.

Those who are well-aware of the fight between Ichigo and Byakuya Kuchiki, will know what I am talking about.

Furthermore, the animations is pretty fluid. Well. That’s nothing to be surprised about, since it is Studio Pierrot we are talking about; they are heaps of experiences regarding fighting scenes. And colour palette gives some uniqueness for the settings. I.e. Hueco Mundo.

Black and White, quiet, unnerving.

And Soul Society.

Colourful, unique and at times… folkloric

And this is just the world in which Bleach takes place. So imagine the rest.

The best for you, regarding the story, is to follow it one episode at the time, so you will fully understand how the world of Bleach works. But for me… How do I explain it? Every time Rukia, or Uryuu, or Yoruichi introduces us in every new concept of the Soul Society, or Shinigami, or anything, they are straight forward, no digressing. And this small fact is very important for me, because it taught me the importance of keep developing, to get your story to new grounds, and never to stop taking your narrative toward other places, as long as you acknowledge what you did before, it is all good.

CHARACTERS

For me, Bleach has some of the best characters in anime history. Ichigo Kurosaki has a pretty interesting backstory, one in which he can delightfully see that balance between a pretty serious-looking hero, and an altruistic personality that makes him a balanced, compelling hero. And he evolves through training and knowledge, and we relate with him straight away. The same goes for Rukia Kuchiki; we see her, fighting, suffering, growing, and having her own story. An event of such a wingspan that it even gets us.

The same happens with Orihime, Chad.

And Uryu. The way he introduces us to the Quincy is so interesting i think we immediately root for him too.

And finally…

SPOILER ALERT – I think Sosuke Aizen is one of the best villains in anime history. He is so unpredictable, so powerful and so terrifyingly resourceful you, at some point, will think he will win. Seriously, every time I saw this guy, I was shaking in fear. And let’s not forget about Gin Ichimaru.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, there are so many great things to say about Bleach; it is definitely one of the greatest anime of the 21st century, and a great member of the Shonen world. Definitely I will recommend it to anyone, even those who are not anime fans.

Trust me. Everything is worth the time. And I hope that this entry perfectly serves as my personal love letter to both Bleach and Tite Kubo.

And next time, join me, because I am gonna BURN THE WITCH (LOL)

Sorry. I know it was a terrible joke.

JAINITUOS ANIME REVIEWS – Darling in the FRANXX – My own Impressions

Darling in the FRANXX

Studio Trigger/Cloverworks/A-1 Pictures

Genre: Mecha, Science- Fiction, Romance

Hey guys.

And welcome to another anime review.

And today… like I said yesterday, I am going to do this anime I really liked a lot, from the very first episode, despite all the controversy. And that anime is…

downloaddarling

Darling in the FRANXX

Oh boy!!! I am so excited.

But before I start, I must ask you the typical Question.

Are you guys ok? Washing your hands? Maintaining social distancing?

If the answer is yes, then I am happy, especially on these very turbulent times of coronavirus. Again, I leave with the same message that I kept repeating for these days…

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE CORONAVIRUS!!!!

Whatever happens, listen to the doctors, to the scientists, and be diligent, if you do, then we will overcome this in no time.

Having said that, let’s go with… DARLING IN THE FRANXX

PREMISE

flat,550x550,075,f

Released in 2018, as a co-production from Studio Trigger and Cloverworks, Darling in the FRANXX takes place in a dystopian future, where relationships and procreation have been eliminated, and humankind is now divided between the adults, who live in big cities and domes, and the children, also known as Parasites, who drive theses mechas, called FRANXX, that defend the Earth and the world of the adults, from a really dangerous alien race that is trying to extinguish humankind, known as the klaxosaurus, a mixture of robots and dinosaurs that are after a great energy, called Magma energy, which is the only that is both helping the adults to live, and helping the FRANXX to work.

One of the kids, named Code:016, or simply Hiro, was once a prodigy at piloting the FRANXX; now is unable to synchronise with them properly, becoming a pariah, that is until he meets a mysterious girl, named Code:002, or Zero Two, who is a hybrid between Human and Klaxosaurus, and her FRANXX, Strelizia; but then, it is revealed that Hiro can pilot Strelizia with no problem.

Because of this, Hiro immediately becomes Zero Two’s… Darling.

This gives Hiro a new purpose for his life, and to recover his place at 13th Squad. Now, both Hiro ans Zero Two unite to defend Earth from the klaxosaurus. But there is a big problem. Zero Two, due to her klaxosaurus blood, is also known as the Partner Killer. Why? Because every partner that Zero Two has dies after the third ride on Strelizia.

Now, Hiro, Zero Two, and the rest of the 13th Squad must survive the klaxosaurus while discovering the secrets of Zero Two herself, the klaxosaurus, and the FRANXX, with many wonderful, romantic sub-plots that will allow our heroes to grow and become more than they could ever expected.

Wow!!! Forgive guys. I know I wrote a lot about the premise. But it is because Darling in the FRANXX has a lot. It has drama, it has romance, it has action, it has delightful characters, it has a very sweet backstory from the FRANXX, the klaxosaurus…

It has everything!!!

There is a lot to say, and that lets to…

STORY

thumb444x250-01

I know what many of you is thinking… This story is Neon Genesis Evangelion.

And yeah… it takes a lot of elements from Evangelion. But come on!!! Evangelion is one of the greatest anime of history. Of course, it is going to influence many series for the years to come. Nevertheless, Darling in the FRANXX is also its own thing. If not, I won’t waste so many paragraphs focused on the premise. Again, it has drama, it has romance, it has comedy, it has sci-fi. And every element of Darling has a solid development, there is a reason of why everything in this series is that it is. And through these wonderful 24 episodes, we come to know everything about this world.

And speaking of story…

HIRO AND ZERO TWO ARE CRIMINALLY ADORABLE!!!

Hiro and Zero Two, as a couple and as individual characters, is what keeps the story so engaging. She is trying to be human, and he is trying to recover his purpose, and through their trials, they truly connect; both their chemistry and development is so organic that is practically hypnotic. Every single romantic moment is really beautiful, I really loved them. I think they are among the best characters of 2018, especially Zero Two.

And… many people will might hate me for this, but…

I LOVE HIRO AND ZERO TWO AS A COUPLE, OVER…

maxresdefault-1039811sao

These two!!!

I am not saying that Asuna and Kirito are a bad couple. They are not. But some elements of their romance feel rushed and unconvincing, especially after what SAO did with Asuna on Fairy Dance Arc.

And no!!! I will not go there!!! Not now.

For me, neither Asuna nor Kirito are explored as they should, especially as a couple, or at least… before Ordinal Scale and Alicization. And it’s funny, because the seiyuu of Asuna and Zero Two is the same person.

Haruka Tomatsu

Anyway, along with the love story of Hiro and Zero Two, Darling in the Franxx deals with themes like adulthood, meaning of life, love, humanity, hope. There are so many themes, and, like Evangelion, Darling in the Franxx addressed them in its own unique vision. Many will not like that, but for me, it is one of the many strengths from Darling in the FRANXX.

Furthermore, the other stories, especially from characters like Zorome, Ikuno, Kokoro and Mitsuru are as charming as the main one. And let’s not forget about about the action.

tenor (3)

SORRY GUYS. I couldn’t find any GIF of the action.

Darling is directed by Atsushi Nishigori, along with Toshifumi Akai, with character design mostly done by Masayoshi Tanaka, who was also involved in Highschool of the Dead, Anohana, and Waiting for Summer among other gems. And the opening song, Kiss of Death, is a really catchy song, especially because the voice of Mika Nakashima is priceless.

In fact…

That is the costume of Mika Nakashima for the cover.

There are so many elements from the story that I have to do a second part. And that’s not all. We also got…

CHARACTERS

Now, I will name them from left to right

Kokoro, Ikuno, Miku, Goro, Zorome, Ichigo, Futoshi and Mitsuru. THE 13TH SQUAD!! And all of them is as recognisable as Hiro and Zero Two. With Ichigo being the leader of the squad, as adorable and diligent as we can be. Personally, I understand that Ichigo might not be that popular among Darling fans, especially because of her… emotions. But let me ask this to the haters…

«Can you blame her?»

Yeah. I will not spoil anything, and I am well aware that some of her actions are just wrong… So wrong… But things are not always black and white, especially in Darling in the FRANXX. There is still a bit of good in Ichigo. Of course that doesn’t completely justify her, but she is not a monster.

Also…

How can you say NO to this cuteness?

And finally, we got…

IKUNO

If you think that the story, should you love Darling in the FRANXX, is beautiful, check out these characters.

I will guarantee you you will love them all. Most of them.

CONCLUSION

To sum up, Darling in the FRANXX is one of my favourite anime, despite having a lot of resemblance to Evangelion, and one of the best works from both Cloverworks and Studio Trigger.

And I strongly recommend it. I will promise a roller coaster of emotions.

Well. Thank you so much for checking my second review of Studio Trigger. And tomorrow I will bring another review, and I wish I could give you a hint but… I watched so much ecchi from the manga of Darling in the FRANXX, from Kentarou Yabuki, and…

I think tomorrow the cops will arrest me and send me to Hell… Do they still have the BFG 9000?
