Este parece el mes de Netflix, porque primero fue Cowboy Bebop de Netflix, y ahora la Parte II de Masters of the Universe: Revelation, luego revisaré Hellbound – 지옥, o quizás Death Note de Netflix. Lo que sea primero. Mi punto es que me sorprendió, porque me sentí como si la Parte II fuera lanzada antes de lo que pensaba.

Y ahora…

Pero antes de comenzar, una respuesta a una pregunta que nadie hizo. Sí, acabo de terminar de ver todos los episodios de la Parte II de Teela y los Maestros del Universo. Quiero decir… Maestros del Universo: Revelación. ¿Por qué los miré? Todavía no lo sé, supongo que una parte de mí quería completar algunos «asuntos pendientes» (si sabes a qué me refiero).

Para ser honesto, no estoy seguro de cuántas personas podrían estar interesadas en la presente entrada, pero la escribiré de todos modos. Además, es mi deber recordarles a todos que lo que escribo aquí es solo mi propia opinión, y no soy precisamente el mayor fan de He-Man y los Maestros del Universo, de todos modos. Si te gustó esta serie, está bien. Dímelo y respetaré tu opinión.

Todo lo que puedo decir es que la Parte I fue un desastre total para mí, y eso se ha mantenido sin cambios.

Finalmente, antes de comenzar, necesito hacerles a mis amigos la pregunta típica:

¿Están bien chicos? ¿Se sienten saludable?

PREMISA

SKELEGOD

Y como ya sabemos, Teela, Andra y Man-At-Arms deben encontrar la manera de derrotar a Skelegod y salvar a Eternia antes de que todo muera. ¿Tendrán éxito?

Además, como en la Parte I, la animación está bellamente realizada por Powerhouse Animation Studios, con Kevin Smith como showrunner y con las talentosas voces de Mark Hamill, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kevin Michael Richardson, Chris Wood, Dee Bradley Baker y Tony. Todd como Scare-Glow.

La Parte II tiene cinco episodios, lo que hace de Masters Of the Universe: Revelation una serie con 10 episodios en total, que asumiré es la primera temporada, porque si esta serie vende juguetes o no, definirá una posible temporada 2.

Ahora, dicho esto, vayamos con …

HISTORIA

Ahora bien, debo decirte que, a partir de ahora, habrá algunos Spoilers a partir de este punto. Entonces, si desea ver la Parte II de MOTU: Revelación, no es que lo desee, no lea el resto de la revisión.

En primer lugar, cuando terminé mis Own Impressions of the MOTU: Revelation Part I, dije que es la peor serie de He-Man que he visto en muchos años, pero después de ver esta Parte II, me di cuenta de que … ES VERDAD . Prácticamente ninguno de los problemas de la Parte I se corrigió, de hecho, todo empeoró cada vez más, porque mientras que en la Parte I, Kevin Smith humilló a He-Man y bastardeó a Teela, en la Parte II, humilla a Skeletor y bastardea a Evil- Lyn. Digámoslo así. ¿Recuerdas eso de que, en la Parte I, lo comparé con Star Wars: The Last Jedi, debido a la falta de respeto constante hacia todo lo grandioso de Star Wars? Bueno, después de ver la Parte II, ahora veo que la Parte I se parece más a The Force Awakens, mientras que la Parte II es como The Last Jedi. ¿Porqué es eso?

Simple. Porque en The Force Awakens, la historia de fondo es extremadamente cruda, y algunos de los personajes e instituciones principales, como la Nueva República, tomaron decisiones que no tenían absolutamente ningún sentido y los convirtieron en idiotas (JJ Abrams abusó de su caja misteriosa), The Last Jedi hizo poco para desarrollar la historia de fondo, mientras hacía una historia que alienó a la película del universo de Star Wars sin ninguna recompensa. Bien. La Parte I de MOTU: Revelation no construyó una historia de fondo sólida y convirtió la historia en un panfleto político manipulador, la Parte II hizo poco para ayudar en eso y mantuvo alejando a Masters of The Universe de… todo y todos.

Ahora, Skelegod tenía un diseño realmente fantástico, pero luego, se revela que Teela es la hija de Sorceress, e inmediatamente curó a Adam de sus heridas, luego, reveló que puede transformarse sin la Power Sword, haciéndolo …

Savage He-Man

Y tengo que decir que la pelea que tuvo con Skelegod es uno de los mejores momentos de la serie de Kevin Smith, es absolutamente épica y tiene una banda sonora increíble. El único problema es que la batalla solo dura unos ocho minutos. Y luego, ¿qué le pasa a Savage He-man? Prácticamente nada. Teela usa su magia, sin entrenamiento previo, y es transportada a Mystic Mountains, así que, después de un encuentro con el Rey Randor, Adam vuelve a la normalidad, y… Savage He-Man no estaba por ningún lado.

Si. Desaparece así. Y este es uno de los problemas de la Parte II of MOTU: Revelation: la serie presenta muchas cosas interesantes que enriquecerían el lore de Masters of the Universe, pero luego desaparecen, de la nada.

Otro ejemplo es el mismo Skelegod.

Se ve fantástico, simplemente tan asombroso como Evil-Lyn como La Nueva Sorceress.

Ahora… si te has convertido en Evil-Lyn

Y es en este punto que Kevin Smith inicia la bastardización. Durante los primeros episodios, Skelegod comienza a abusar de Evil-Lyn, y ella se cansa de él, obviamente, y decide quitarle el poder. ¿Cómo? De la forma más tonta posible. Ella seduce a Skelegod y lo convence de que renuncie a la Espada de Grayskull, ¡Sólo para que ella OBTENGA EL PODER! A partir de ese momento, Skeletor se convierte en una broma, nunca hace nada memorable en esta forma de Dios, aparte de luchar contra la versión de Hulk de He-Man, y luego se va. Nada más y nada menos. Claro, Skelegod regresa nuevamente en el episodio diez para luchar contra He-Man, pero nuevamente, la batalla no dura mucho y Skeletor tiene la peor derrota posible: imitando al Team Rocket.

Hablo muy en serio.

Uno de los villanos más rudos de los 80 se reduce a un payaso, porque, para Kevin Smith, Evil-Lyn es una víctima. Solo porque es mujer, automáticamente es una víctima. No importa si cometió genocidio en Preternia.

Si es un hombre, el asesinato y la humillación están bien, pero si es una mujer, todo puro porque sí.

Hablando de eso, otros personajes increíbles de la franquicia MOTU, Fisto y Clamp-Champ …

… solo aparecen como dos minutos, y luego ambos son asesinados de la manera más sin ceremonias posible.

Y finalmente … Orko revive.

Se convierte prácticamente en un Dios, apareciendo solo en el episodio 10; ayudando a Adam, Man-At-Arms, Andra y el resto de Eternia en la batalla contra Evil-Lyn. Ahora, ese fue un momento realmente dulce, pero se sintió corto debido al tiempo restante en ese momento. Y es por eso que considero a White Orko como otro elemento desaprovechado.

De todos modos, mi punto es que mientras MOTU: Revelation – Part I pecó al destruir a He-Man y Skeletor de la peor manera posible, convirtiendo a Teela en una «mocosa» insoportable, la Parte II pecó al tener tantos conceptos geniales que podrían desarrollar tanto la historia de fondo como los personajes, pero se sentían cortos … y destruyendo a Skeletor de la peor manera posible. Y esos fueron algunos ejemplos, pero hay más.

Es como ir a una barbacoa y tener solo dos opciones: hamburguesas podridas o salchichas crudas. Ambas son repugnantes, ambas me enfermarán, así que ambas me harán alejarme. Y así es como se sienten juntas la Parte I y la Parte II.

Y ahora…

PERSONAJES

Un elemento que realmente me sorprende es la mejora con algunos de los personajes, Teela cambia su actitud para mejor, porque se disculpa por algunas de sus acciones, reconoce a Duncan como su padre, recuerda el valor de sus amigos y familiares, y, lo que considero algunas de sus mejores adiciones …

Tiene un diseño muy bonito como Hechicera. Por supuesto, para aquellos que odiaban la Parte I, no se sentirán cómodos con Teela, pero al menos aprecio este cambio, muestra cierta madurez necesaria.

Además, Adam tiene cierta relevancia y sus acciones demuestran cierto desarrollo, cuando invoca el Poder de Grayskull sin la espada, a pesar de las consecuencias; toma la iniciativa cuando Evil-Lyn ataca, le da una pelea decente contra ella y tiene una química decente con Teela. Oh … Y He-Man tiene un mejor papel; aparece al final de la Parte II, pero al menos Kevin Smith le muestra algo de respeto.

Esa sonrisa finalmente es un buen augurio

Desafortunadamente, existe otro problema; por cada un acto redentor tanto de He-Man como de Teela, todavía hay muchos agujeros de trama que arruinan sus partes buenas, como …

¿Cuántos años han pasado desde la «muerte» de He-Man?

¿Realmente Randor y Marlena no hicieron nada para proteger a Eternia?

¿No han pensado al menos que quizás esa era la voluntad de su hijo?

¿Por qué no estaban Fisto y Clamp-Champ con los reyes de Eternia?

Y más importante…

¿Quién diablos es Andra?

¿Cómo conoció a Teela? ¿Quién era su abuelo? ¿Cómo es que no supo de Adam antes?

De nuevo… Amber, de Invincible tiene más personalidad que esta versión de Andra.

Otro defecto que interrumpe la mejora de los personajes es el desarrollo de Evil-Lyn, y me refiero a dos formas distintas. El primero es con sus flashbacks, diciendo que sus padres querían matarla y comérsela, y luego Skeletor la salva. Es bueno que MOTU: Revelation quisiera mostrar una historia de fondo para Evil-Lyn, de hecho, esos flashbacks son mucho mejores que en la Parte I, sin embargo, tengo más preguntas:

¿Cómo aprendió la magia Evil-Lyn? ¿Por qué Skeletor estaba tan interesado en ella? ¿Realmente Evil-Lyn se convirtió en quien era gracias a un gran esfuerzo? ¿O le enseñó Skeletor? Si Skeletor le enseñó a Evil-Lyn, todas las razones para que ella traicionara a Skeletor son inútiles, pero si no lo hizo, técnicamente reclutaría una amenaza para sus planes, algo que sucedió.

Pero prefiero descartar esta opción, porque arruino una serie animada estrenada hace casi cuarenta años.

La segunda forma es a través de la apariencia de Evil-Lyn como God-Lyn. Mirad.

No sé por donde comenzar.

No parece intimidante, no se ve sexy o mínimamente solemne. Aquí, Evil-Lyn parece… ridículo. Es como una extraña mezcla entre un culturista y Raven. ¿Cuál fue el propósito de esto? ¿Hacer que Evil-Lyn sea más realista? Eso no tiene ningún sentido, porque esta es una historia de fantasía; ¿Hacer que Evil-Lyn parezca un gladiador debido a la asombrosa inspiración? Bueno … no siento miedo, solo vergüenza.

Si Kevin Smith quería convertir a Evil-Lyn en algo terrible, lo logró … pero no en el buen sentido.

Finalmente he terminado.

CONCLUSIÓN

En conclusión, la Parte II de Masters of the Universe: Revelation muestra una pequeña mejora con respecto a la Parte I, pero no es suficiente para redimir esta parodia de la adaptación de He-Man. Repito: los elementos buenos son la animación, la acción, algo de diseño de personajes y la banda sonora.

Pero el resto … es un desastre.

Tengo la sensación de que tal vez si Kevin Smith hiciera más episodios, o incluyera adecuadamente un arco de la historia para cada personaje, el resultado final sería mejor. Pero, lamentablemente, ese no es el caso, lamentablemente, porque todos los conceptos presentados por Smith tenían mucho potencial.

Sin embargo, todo el potencial por sí solo no significa nada, y en cambio, tenemos lo que creo que es el peor He-Man y los Maestros del Universo que he visto en años.

Ahora … necesito prepararme para revisar Death Note de Netflix, porque …

Hello my friends. Welcome to another entry of my blog.

This looks like the Netflix month, because first it was Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, and now the Part II of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, then I will be reviewing Hellbound – 지옥, or perhaps Netflix’s Death Note. Whatever comes first. My point is that I was surprised, because I fell like Part II was released earlier than I thought.

And now…

But before I start, an answer to a question nobody asked. Yes, I just finished watching all the episodes of Part II of Teela and the Masters of the Universe. I mean… Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Why did I watch them? I still don’t know, I guess a part of me wanted to complete some «unfinished business» (if you know what I mean).

To be honest, I am not sure of how many people might be interested in the present entry, but I will write it anyway. Furthermore, is is my duty to remind everybody that what I write here is only my own opinion, and I am not precisely the biggest fan of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, anyway. If you enjoyed this series, that’s ok. Tell me, and I will respect your opinion.

All I can say is that Part I was a total mess for me, and that was remained unchanged.

Finally, before I start, I need to ask you my friends the typical question:

Are you guys ok? Feeling healthy?

If the answer is yes, then I feel relieved.

Now, let’s show that we still have the power.

PREMISE

Literally, the Part II of Masters of the Universe: Revelation finished where Part II, I mean, with Adam returning from Preternia, Skeletor stabbing him, taking possession of the Sword of Grayskull, Evil-Lyn rejoining him while Skeletor becomes…

SKELEGOD

And as we already know, Teela, Andra and Man-At-Arms must find a way to defeat Skelegod and save Eternia before everything dies. Will they succeed?

Also, as on the Part I – the animation is beautifully done by Powerhouse Animation Studios, with Kevin Smith as showrunner, and with the talented voices of Mark Hamill, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kevin Michael Richardson, Chris Wood, Dee Bradley Baker, and Tony Todd as Scare-Glow.

Part II has five episodes, making Masters Of the Universe: Revelation a series with 10 episodes in total, which I will assume is the first season, because whether this series sells toys or not will define a potential season 2.

Now, with that said, let’s go with the…

STORY

Now, I must tell you that, from now on, there will be some Spoilers from this point. So if you want to see Part II of MOTU: Revelation, not that you want to, don’t read the rest of the review.

First and foremost, when I finished my Own Impressions of the MOTU: Revelation Part I, I stated that it is the worst He-Man series that I have seen in many years, but after watching this Part II, I realised that… IS TRUE. Pretty much none of the problems of Part I were corrected were, in fact, everything just got worse and worse, because while in Part I, Kevin Smith humiliated He-Man and bastardised Teela, in Part II, he humiliates Skeletor and bastardises Evil-Lyn. Let’s put it like this. Remember that in Part I – I compared it with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, due to the ongoing disrespect toward everything great from Star Wars? Well, after watching Part II, now I see that Part I is more like The Force Awakens, while Part II is like The Last Jedi. Why is that?

Simple. Because in The Force Awakens, the backstory is extremely crude, and some of the main characters and institutions, like the New Republic, took decisions that made absolutely no sense and turn them into morons (J.J. Abrams abusing of his mystery box) , The Last Jedi did little to develop the backstory, while making a story that alienated the movie from the universe of Star Wars with definitely no payoff. Well. Part I of MOTU: Revelation did not build any solid backstory and turn the story into a manipulative political pamphlet, Part II did little to help on that and kept alienating Masters of The Universe from… everything and everyone.

Now, Skelegod had a really fantastic design, but then, it is revealed that Teela is the daughter of Sorceress, and she immediately cured Adam from his wounds, then, he revealed that he can transformed without the Power Sword, making him…

SAVAGE HE-MAN

And I have to say that the fight he got with Skelegod is one of the best moments of the Kevin Smith series, it is absolutely epic and has an amazing soundtrack. The only problem is that the battle only lasts like eight minutes. And then what happens to Savage He-man. Practically nothing. Teela uses her magic, with no previous training, and transported to Mystic Mountains, so, after an encounter with King Randor, Adam returns to normal, and… Savage He-Man was nowhere to be found.

Yes. It disappears just like that. And this is one of the problems of Part of MOTU: Revelation – the series presents a lot of cool stuff that would enrich the lore of Masters of the Universe, but then they disappear, out of nowhere.

Another example is Skelegod myself.

He looks fantastic, simply as awesome as Evil-Lyn as The New Sorceress.

Now, she has become Evil-Lyn

And it is on this point that Kevin Smith starts the bastardisation. During the first episodes, Skelegod starts abusing Evil-Lyn, and she gets tired of him, obviously, and decides to take the power from him. How? With the dumbest way possible. She seduces Skelegod and convinces him to relinquish the Sword of Grayskull, just for her to GET THE POWER!!! From that moment, Skeletor becomes a joke, he never truly does anything memorable in this God form, aside from fighting the Hulk version of He-Man, and then he is gone. Nothing more and nothing less. Sure, Skelegod returns again in episode ten to fight He-Man, but again, the battle doesn’t last long and Skeletor has the worst defeat possible – imitating Team Rocket.

I am dead serious.

One of the most badass villains of the 80s is reduced to a clown, because, for Kevin Smith, Evil-Lyn is a victim. Just because she is a woman, she is automatically a victim. It doesn’t matter if she committed genocide in Preternia.

If it is a man, murder and humiliation are fine, but if it is a woman, all pure because Yes.

Speaking of which, other awesome characters from the MOTU franchise, Fisto and Clamp-Champ…

…only appear like two minutes, and then both are killed off in one of the most unceremonious manner possible.

And finally… Orko revives.

He becomes practically a God, appearing in only episode 10; helping Adam, Man-At-Arms, Andra, and the rest of Eternia in the battle against Evil-Lyn. Now, that was a really sweet moment, but it felt short because of the remaining time at that point. And that is why I consider White Orko another wasted element.

Anyway, my point is that while MOTU: Revelation – Part I sinned by destroying He-Man and Skeletor in the worst way possible, making Teela an insufferable «brat», Part II sinned by having so many cool concepts that could develop both backstory and characters, but they felt short… and by destroying Skeletor in the worst way possible. And those were some examples, but there are more.

It’s like going to a barbecue and having only two options – rotten burgers or raw sausages. Both are disgusting, both will make me sick, so both make me walk away. And that is how Part I and Part II feel put together.

And now…

CHARACTERS

One element that really surprise me is the improvement with some of the characters, Teela changes her attitude for the better, because she apologises by some of her actions, she acknowledges Duncan as her father, she remembers the value of her friends and family, and, what I consider some of her best additions…

She has a really nice design as Sorceress. Of course, for those who hated Part I won’t feel comfortable with Teela, but at least I appreciate this change – it shows some necessary maturity.

Also, Adam has some relevance and his actions prove some development, when he summons the Power of Grayskull without the sword, despite the consequences; he takes initiative when Evil-Lyn attacks, he gives a decent fight against her, and have a decent chemistry with Teela. Oh… And He-Man has a better role; he appear at the end of Part II, but at least Kevin Smith show him some respect.

That smile finally is a good omen.

Unfortunately there is another problem; for one redeeming act from both He-Man and Teela, there is still a lot of plotholes that ruin their good parts, such as…

How many years has past since the «death» of He-Man?

Did really Randor and Marlena did nothing for protecting Eternia?

Haven’t at least they thought that perhaps that was the will of their son?

Why weren’t Fisto and Clamp-Champ with the kings of Eternia?

And more importantly…

Who the hell is Andra?

How did she meet Teela? Who was her grandfather? How come she didn’t hear from Adam before?

Again… Amber, from Invincible has more personality than this version of Andra.

Another flaw that disrupts the improvement on the characters is the development of Evil-Lyn, and I mean in two different ways. The first one is with her flashbacks, telling that her parents wanted to kill and eat her, and then Skeletor saves her. It is nice that MOTU: Revelation wanted to show some backstory for Evil-Lyn, indeed those flashbacks are way better than in Part I, however I have more questions:

How Evil-Lyn learnt magic? Why Skeletor was so interested on her? Did really Evil-Lyn became who she was due to sheer effort? Or Skeletor taught her? If Skeletor taught Evil-Lyn, every reason for her to betray Skeletor is pointless, but if he did not, he technically recruit a threat to his plans, something that happened.

But I prefer to discard this option, because I ruin an animated series released almost forty years ago.

The second way is through Evil-Lyn’s appearance as God-Lyn. Look.

I… do not know where to start.

She does not look intimidating, she does not look sexy, or minimally solemn. Here, Evil-Lyn looks… laughable. It is like a weird mixture between a bodybuilder and Raven. What was the purpose of this? Make Evil-Lyn more realistic? That doesn’t make any sense, because this is a fantasy story; Make Evil-Lyn look like a gladiator due to the awe-inspiration? Well… I don’t feel fear, just embarassment.

If Kevin Smith wanted to make Evil-Lyn dreadful, he succeeded… but not in a good way.

(sigh)

Finally done now.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, Part II of Masters of the Universe: Revelation shows a small improvement toward Part I, but it is not enough to redeem this travesty of He-Man adaptation. I repeat myself – the good elements are the animation, the action, some character design and the soundtrack.

But the rest… is a mess.

I have the feeling that perhaps should Kevin Smith did more episodes, or properly include a story arc to each character, the final result would be better. But unfortunately that is not the case, sadly, because every concept brought by Smith had so much potential.

However, all the potential alone means nothing, and instead, we have what I believe is the worst He-Man and the Masters of the Universe that I have seen in years.

Now… I need to prepare myself to review Netflix’s Death Note, because…

And turns out that I have packed my bags, and I moved out. That’s right. Despite the very complicated situation of travelling abroad nowadays, I said to myself… Screw that, I will take the plane. And I moved from Japan…

…to South Korea.

After giving plasma to Australia

And I did all of this in order to be able to watch that incredible show that is giving a lot of people reasons to be subscribed to Netflix, or very happy to already be. And trust me, it is going to be worth it. Junji Ito is great, he will always be great, but now the star is the games and the blood.

Ok. I am digressing. And now, here it is…

But seriously… How could I not talk about this fantastic South Korean TV show? Especially because…

Oldboy is one of my favourite movies, and one of the greatest South Korean movies in history

And also…

I have enjoyed Tower of God, The God of High School, and Leviathan. All of them being highly entertaining manhwa.

And I add honourable mention to…

But only, because I haven’t watched it yet.

Anyway, before I start, I must ask the typical questions:

With that said, let’s start Squid Game, or 오징어 게임.

PREMISE

Seong Gi-hun is a 46-year-old divorced chauffeur living in Seoul, with very severe gambling problems and unable to financially support his daughter. To make things worse, he is deeply indebted with the banks… and loan sharks, who are constantly chasing him to recovering their money. One of them gives him a month to pay his money, or he will lose a kidney.

That night, a man in a very elegant suit invites to play a game – ddakji – with Gi-hun. After winning, the man gives Gi-hun his card, and tells him about «another game» in which a big money prize will be awarded. Willing to support his daughter, Gi-hun accepts, and when he is about to be pick up, he is made unconscious, and brought to an unknown location. There, a group of pink-hoodie masked individuals tells Gi-hun, as well as another 455 players, all of them on dire financial situation, that the prize is approximately billions of won for the person who beats six different games in six days.

At first, it sounds exciting, but on the first game – Red Light, Green Light – those who lose… are gunned down, proving the violent nature of the games. Gi-hun miraculously survives, but now he must beat order five games in five days, in which the prize could be of… 45.6 billion won.

Along with Gi-hun, there are relevant characters, such as Cho Sang-woo, Gi-hun childhood friend, wanted by police for stealing money from clients; Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean defector who tries to bring her family to cross the border; Oh Il-nam, and elderly man with a brain tumor who prefers to play the game over waiting for death, Abdul Ali, a Pakistani foreign worker who is not being paid in six months; Jang Deok-su, a gangster with massive gambling debts; and Han Mi-nyeo, an unscrupulous woman who claims to be a single mother.

Squid Game has nine episodes, available on Netflix, whose running time is between 32-63 minutes, all of them written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, director and producer famous for directing movies like My Father (2007), and Miss Granny (2014). The music is composed by Jung Jae-il, who also composed the soundtrack for Parasite and Okja (2017), also directed by Boon Jong-ho. And I can’t recommend the soundtrack enough, because it is just… fantastic and chilling.

I recommend the tracks called The Pink Soldiers, and Way Back Then.

As you can imagine, Squid Game has a lot of very talented people working on it. And before anything, I want to mention Gong Yoo, you know…

And trust me. When you see him again in Squid Game, you will be willing to let him slap you.

STORY

As you can see, Squid Game combines Saw, The Hunger Games, Battle Royale, and The Running Man with the themes of Class Inequalities displayed in Parasite. Seriously, this series is a combination of genres and social commentary beautifully amalgamated with the sharp criticism that only Black Mirror exhibits, leaving no one indifferent. Of course, anyone will say that this plot is being used before.

And they are right.

Especially in Saw, but unlike the former, in which it is more evil, mean-spirited individuals with a small chance of redemption (literally, minuscule), Squid Game is unfortunate individuals who, despite their flaws, they love their relatives and are willing to do anything to see them, and to live a normal life in a very convoluted and unequal world.

Honestly, Gi-hun is troubled, but he is a good person by heart.

Just look at him. He looks like a nice guy. Don;’t you want to hug him?

In other words, if you like Parasite, or Black Mirror, you will enjoy Squid Game.

The story is a very awesome strength, because the first two episodes take their time to present the characters; first we have Gi-hun’s story in Red Light, Green Light, his problems and reasons to keep going. And the episode is so well-written that there are no plot holes. The story goes in such a fluid way that, at the end, Gi-hun entering the game feels natural, it feels convincing, and by the time the game starts, now the episode seems to do whatever it wants. But don’t get me wrong, when I say this, I mean it can stop worrying about story and world-building and give itself the necessary freedom to show action, blood and tension.

But, like I said, that is because it is well-written.

But episode two it’s better, for one reason, we immediately understand one shocking truth… The players have no choice but to keep playing the game. Their background and current situation is so desperate all they can do is go back. And we, as an audience, we comprehend that straight away. But Episode 2 does not need to put extra effort. It already has! Episode 1 constructs the story, the characters and the world so well, that by Episode 2, we are now convinced that players must go back.

And Squid Game proves that there is no need of big explosions, clichés from box office productions, or convoluted plots. All what it is needed is an excellent writing.

It is a shame that there are no too much TV shows willing to really work on their writing; but to exhibit shallow propaganda and lazy, rushed plots with no story.

Seriously, I still haven’t removed the sour taste of Teela’s show.

Squid Game is not only well-written, it is an excellent series cinematographically speaking, the shots, the montage, the sound editing, the film editing, the special effects, and the score are perfect toward the plot and the story.

My only criticism is that sometimes the series can be a bit slow. That’s right! You enjoy the games so much that you just want to know what is next. Or skipping the scenes from the outside world. Or… you can to watch them, in order to understand better our protagonists.

That depends on everyone’s point of view.

Finally, there is a subplot, in which a police officer, Hwang Jun-ho, tries to find his missing brother, Hwang In-ho. And it is this plot who adds to the thriller and suspense.

Because yes… Everything is tension. Everything keeps you on the chair. And the runtime of each episode, despite being too long, in my personal opinion, it is absolutely well-invested, even the smallest details have a reason, and you will see that in Episode 4 – Stick to the Team.

Honestly, I want to keep talking about every element more and more. Very few series urge me to write even a million words, even though I can’t. Case in point…

CHARACTERS

In case I haven’t establish it yet, I will say it now.

For me, there is something as important as the story itself, and those are the characters. The reason of why we want to read, watch and listen to stories is to meet likeable, relatable characters we can root. Of course everything else is important, but me, story and characters must prioritise over everything else.

And Squid Game really does a good job creating its characters. Both protagonists and antagonists… and villains.

I already mentioned that Episode 1 and Episode 2 establish our characters perfectly, all of them. Gi-hun, Sang-woo, Sae-byeuk, Deok-su, Il-nam, Ali, Mi-nyeo. Just like Oldboy in 2003, Squid Game is masterful. If a story is really, really well-written, then the characters should come as interesting too.

And at the end, all you can do is wonder…

Who is good and who is evil in this series?

Of course, some characters will make very despicable acts, especially that I end up hating for the right reasons. I will not tell you who, but Squid Game does great in makes us think… Who is really a hero here?

And again, not every current series is able to do that right now.

CONCLUSION

Undoubtedly, Squid Game is one of the best series from Netflix and the present moment, and greatest streaming series of 2021, along with Invincible. The best is that I still have a lot to watch, but the impression that I got will stay with me for years. I mean, I watched Oldboy over ten years ago, and I still fondly remembered it today.

Honestly, after the huge fiasco of Masters of The Universe: Revelation, watching Squid Game was refreshing. Like a hot shower after being at the rain for words.

But… which is the best series between Invincible and Squid Game? I like both equally, because both have an excellent feeling of realism. But while Invincible does for superhero genre, and has better character evolution, Squid Game is strong in social commentary and survival, and has the best story.

Also… before I go. Let me mark my words once more.

While Masters of the Universe: Revelation is one of the worst Netflix series of 2021, at least for now.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation – My Own Impressions

Hello to all my friends.

Welcome to another entry on my blog.

Today I want to do something different.

As I said before, I was so eager to make a reflection of this new series of He-man , produced by the legendary Kevin Smith. Because, as we have all seen on the Internet, this has given us something to talk about, and for very good reasons, including the title, this image, and the fact that Netflix is the one that is producing this series.

First of all, I want to clarify that I am a fan of He-Man , although I am not that obsessive; I never read the comics, I never read the crossover with Thundercats, and I don’t collect their figurines; What I did see was the original series, the one from the nineties, the 2002 remake, where Teela was much younger, and the disastrous movie with Dolph Lundgren, although hardly, because every time I do it, I can’t stop laughing.

I also want to remind my beautiful readers that Masters of the Universe: Revelation is a sequel to the iconic 1983 animated series, at least according to Kevin Smith. And that I will mention later.

But first, I want to ask the typical question

Are you guys fine? Being healthy?

If the answer is yes, then I am happy.

And before I start, I must say… There will be spoilers. With that said, let’s get started.

PREMISE

Masters of the Universe: Revelation takes place after the expected final battle between Skeletor and He- Man, where, unfortunately, the Sword of Power ends fractured, the magic of Eternia collapses, and He-Man  dies «. Now, it depends on Teela recover the Sword of Power and save both Eternia and the rest of the universe.

Simply put, it’s how the fans said it… It’s the Teela Show.

Moreover, I knew that would happen, and not just because Netflix distributes this series, but because, like many fans, there is something on the trailer that I think we all noticed, is that …

«There wasn’t the iconic He- Man song , the one from the eighties intro .»

Instead, we got «I need a Hero», which is definitely not a bad song, it’s very sticky, but if this series really is a sequel tof He Man and the Masters of the Universe, at least should have included this song at some point, even if it’s a simple remix. And it was these two factors that made me understand where this series would go.

Before moving on, I want to clarify that Masters of the Universe: Revelation, as of July 25, has five episodes, but Kevin Smith is going to release a second part soon. Speaking of Kevin Smith, I’m going to try not to talk too much about the controversies that revolve around his name, except that Smith tricked us into thinking the show is about He-Man, when it isn’t.

Anyway, I’m going to start with …

STORY (I repeat … SPOILERS)

I’ll start talking about l or good, from the animation.

This one comes from the hand of Powerhouse Animation Studios, which brought us the fantastic Castlevania series from Netflix  And it shows, because the colour palette is very well balanced, especially in the Castle Grayskull, Snake Mountain, Subternia, and the rest of Eternia, they put great effort to animation. On the other hand, the battles are usually very entertaining, and when you see the characters that you love so much, you feel that, somehow, you go back to those days of your childhood. 

And the soundtrack of Bear McCreary is awesome, but not as great as the classic groundout He- Man eighties. Nothing could beat ir.

Now is the time for the bad ; get ready because I have a lot to say here.

First , I tell them that He- Man only reappears in episode four, and not even He- Man , just as Adam, to that end, Skeletor stabs in the back and took the Sword of Power for himself.

They killed He- Man twice! Twice the most powerful man in the universe! I hadn’t seen such an affront against a beloved character from the eighties and nineties since John Connor , in Terminator : Dark Fate , or since Luke Skywalker in Star Wars : The Last Jedi .

So why this poster that seems to reveal that He-Man will take over the reins of the series?

Mr. Smith! If you will do this to the fans, don’t complain if they ever throw shit at you.

Second, the story seemed lazy to me, and sometimes even forced. Nor I know where to start, but has the same problem as  the Star Wars sequel trilogy: it seeks to establish a narrative without a good backstory and then expect us to assimilate it just like that, to this we must add that seems to destroy, or tarnish, much of the lore of the eighties series.

I will try to explain it in detail.

As I said before, in the first episode, we have the great battle between He- Man and Skeletor , which seems to kill them both ; later , we see that Teela learns that Prince Adam is He- Man ; for those who remember the original series, only four people knew of his identity, Sorceress, Orko, Man-at-Arms and Cringer , and the intro of the series clarifies that fact as well. But within seconds of the battle, Queen Marlena reveals that Adam is dead, to put it simply, she also knew her son’s secret. And I wonder:

«At what time did you hear about this?» «Who told you the truth?» » Man-At-Arms?»

Impossible, because Man-at-Arms confirms that he also concealed the truth.

And then we see that Teela becomes furious and accuses everyone, including Man-at-Arms , who just got exiled , and Adam himself, then resigns her post in Grayskull and disappears. That last, for me, does not make sense, but I will explain later why.

In episode two, Teela becomes a mercenary, takes a partner, Andra , whom I will talk about her later, and tries to get away from everything related to magic, while it is obvious that Eternia is dying because of the absence of it . And I wonder.

«How long has it been?» «Who is Andra?» «What happened to Randor and Marlena?» «What about the past between Adam and Teela?» «Is Teela seriously going to let Eternia die just because of her emotions?»

My point is that this series doesn’t seem to rely on its predecessor to build its plot, it doesn’t even recognize it; they just put a couple of references to it and nothing else, like the designs of He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms, Sorceress and Skeletor . But by episode two, everything that has to do with the series of the eighties is almost nonexistent, except for a couple of flashbacks with He- Man and Teela .

But those flashbacks are pure filler, they do not say anything about the relationship between Adam and Teela , or how they met, how they became friends, what kind of trust they had, if at some point Teela told him about what He-Man inspires her to Adam . Those kinds of things that build the characters, which I consider as important as the story itself. In fact, if you remove those flashbacks, it doesn’t affect this one at all.

And considering that Masters of the Universe: Revelation , is a sequel to He- Man , it should explore more of the characters and their ties within the context of the original series, especially because of such a drastic decision that Teela made at the end of the first episode .

I admit that it is difficult to explain, even for me ; It basically boils down to this – If being a sequel is a lie, then create your own background that justifies the protagonists, especially Andra and Teela , and if it isn’t, then develop the context of your predecessor series a bit , so that the link is noticed . But do not put Teela resigned to her position in Grayskull that abruptly because it looks really bad. 

This is what I meant by being forced.

Also, the pace of the story is somewhat slow and heavy. And it’s all Teela’s fault , for her attitude that I can only qualify as pedantic ; the character, far from moving you, exasperates you, all the time he is complaining, trashing magic, trashing He- Man , and escaping from her responsibilities. In fact, I confess to you that when I watched the episodes, all I wanted was to fast-forward them, or see how much time was left.

The problem with Masters of the Universe: Revelation is not that it focuses on Teela , the problem is that it does not feel natural, it is basically  a bear trap, they hook you with the posters, the trailers and the action figures, but in the end, is a story without a soul focused on an irritating heroine, who not only does not convey charisma, but throws stones at everything we fans want, as happened with Terminator : Dark Fate , as happened with Ghostbusters 2016 , as happened with the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Do you notice the pattern?

And to finish with the story, I want to clarify that there are scenes that are well done, but it is because of the dialogue more than anything, as in chapter three, where Orko talks with Andra , and tells him that he cannot remember the fantastic adventures with He-Man and his friends, so it gives the following advice:

» Andra , if you decide to become adventurous, always keep a diary and write everything down, even the most insignificant details, because when it’s all over, you’ll only have two things at the end – good friends and happy memories.»

That scene was pretty touching. In fact, there are more scenes like this, like the meeting between Teela and Cringer . But they alone don’t improve the story , not even a little . 

Regrettably.

CHARACTERS

In general, the character part is better… but not too much.

To begin with, we must give him credit that the characters of Man-At-Arms, He-Man, Adam, Cringer, Beast Man and Tri-klops retain their personalities; As for Orko , I think they wanted to improve it, which was unnecessary in my personal opinion. Orko was fine as they left him, but if that was the case … they ruined it with his death in episode 4.

Why? Because his death was very premature. Orko does almost nothing, and they want him a dignified death without first giving him a story arc or charactercdevelopment in top condition. Same as with He-Man

Exactly what happened to Han Solo in The Force Awakens, or Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi .

Nonetheless, Mark Hamill does a great job as a Skeletor. It makes the character intimidating and can be taken seriously as a threat, although he sounds like Skeletor at times, and at times like the Joker. Also Tony Todd as Scare Glow is great. The actor himself is one of my favourites, but his voice is the best, it shows that he was born to dub villains.

Now, we all know that reputation that has Netflix to force the inclusion in franchise … at the expense of the story. Of course! There are cases where inclusion is well done, like with Bojack Horseman and She- Ra and the Princesses of Power . The problem is that, for every She- Ra, we have five or six Netflix’s Death Note.

“ What they did to L ( Lakeith Stainfeld ) is simply unforgivable. Do not know how t or hate this L, is undoubtedly the worst. «

Why do I say this? Because I have a worthy question – Who the hell is Andra?

It’s true! She is the companion of Teela and a talented engineer, but the character has no background – I don’t know where she comes from or how she met Teela, and any adventures together whatsoever. How do they expect us to want a character like that flat? And yes, I know that Andra appeared in the comics, but it is more than clear that it is not an adaptation, especially since this Andra is dark skinned.

Look… I’m going to give my opinion on inclusion for the future… I love it! I love inclusion! Technically I am from a minority, so having characters of different races, genders and sexual orientation is beautiful, because it shows how diverse and colourful the world is. But there is a big difference between natural inclusion … AND FORCED INCLUSIVITY, or between inclusivity and tokenism.

Tokenism is when you put a character with a characteristic that is merely superficial, and you turn everything into it, which results in something flat and laughable. If you want to be inclusive in your story, go for it; as I said, that’s very nice, but make sure that race, gender, or sexual orientation are A PART of your characters; You must also include their strengths, their weaknesses, their traumas, their fears, their dreams … Their humanity. And above all … Do not be racist with straight white men, or with those who do not think like you.

Sorry. What I mean is that Andra makes me forgettable and simple, because it shows that they wanted to put other races just because yes, In fact… Amber from Invincible has more personality than Andra.

Although I have to say that Evil- Lynn is still the most hypnotic and charismatic villain, especially with the voice of Lena Headey. Oh! I’m in love!

And finally, I fin pretty stupid that Teela abandons her family and Eternia to their fate due to a secret she could discover years ago, it is a cowardly, selfish and reprehensible attitude, and I am convinced it has nothing to do with the Teela we grew up with, especially since she’s called, and I quote… «a deadly warrior and a formidable strategist.» If that were true, then she would have suspected that Adam is He-Man.

Teela is a warrior, Adam’s guardian and became Man-At-Arms , she should understand that there are sacrifices, risks, more than anything for what is at stake in Eternia; there is a duty to fulfill, and therefore, it is above our emotions. Teela may be upset, but neither Grayskull, nor Eternia, nor the Universe have to pay for the decisions of five people.

In addition, it is that its design from chapter 2 I did not like much; especially his haircut; I don’t know, but it reminds me a lot of Abby’s in The Last of Us : Part II .

And worst of all, she doesn’t get any better; all the time he trashes magic, Grayskull, Adam, even when he sacrificed his life to give Eternia hope, always with that pedantic attitude. In fact, in Episode 3, when she meets his father again, she reproaches him for being a coward who only thinks about himself. «Look who’s talking.» And before Subternia, Teela mentions something to Man-At-Arms about making up for the past, saying …

«… but If you want to make it all up to me …»

Which translates into: if he wants to redeem himself toward her …

Which led me to think… What does he have to make up for Teela? She, far from helping him cope with his exile, abandoned him to his fate, as I already said, just for a secret that Teela, in her capacity as a warrior, could have been deciphering with her abilities. I mean, Duncan adopted Teela, I love her, raised her, she is who she is in part because of him. And this is how she thank him? 

Maybe I am wrong; If anyone can correct me, I would really appreciate it.

CONCLUSION

Masters of the Universe: Revelation is a mediocre series that did not satisfy me.

As a He- Man series , it leaves a lot to be desired; It does not have a solid background, many of its characters are bulky, despite the beautiful animation, it is very boring; And despite the great battles, you want everything to end quickly . But as a sequel to the 80’s series, it is even worse, it does not feel that connection with its sister series, it does not take advantage of the possible plots it has. And the worst of all …

It puts He-Man pretty ashamed!!

I might see Part II, but that’s how it goes. I reiterate that all this is only my opinion. The truth is that this series is going to divide the fans, just as Star Wars: The Last Jedi did .  

If you want to see it, perfect … Watch it. And if you like it, you like it. I will respect that. But I don’t promise it will make you happy.

And finally, those who did not like Masters of the Universe: Revelation, go with the original series, or else… with the remake of 2002. In my personal opinion, it’s a lot!

Amos del Universo: Revelación – Mis propias Impresiones

Hola a todos mis amigos.

Bienvenidos a otra entrada de mi blog.

Hoy quiero hacer algo distinto.

Como ya les dije antes, tenía tantos deseos de hacer una reflexión de esta nueva serie de He-man, producida por el legendario Kevin Smith. Porque, como todos ya hemos visto en el Internet, esto ha dado de qué hablar, y por muy buenas razones, entre ellas el título, esta imagen, y el hecho de que Netflix sea el que está produciendo esta serie.

Primero que nada, quiero aclarar que soy fan de He-Man, aunque no soy tan obsesivo; nunca me leí los comics, nunca me leí el crossover con Thundercats, y no colecciono sus figuritas; lo que sí me vi fue la serie original, la de los noventas, el remake del 2002, donde Teela era mucho más joven, y la desastrosa película con Dolph Lundgren, aunque a duras penas, porque cada vez que lo hago, no puedo parar de reírme.

También quiero recordarles a mis hermosos lectores que Amos del Universo: Revelación es una secuela de la icónica serie animada de 1983, al menos según Kevin Smith. Y eso lo voy a mencionar luego.

Pero antes, quiero hacer la típica pregunta

¿Se encuentran bien? ¿Estando saludables?

Si la respuesta es sí, entonces yo soy feliz.

Y antes de empezar, debo decir… Habrá spoilers. Con esto dicho, empecemos.

PREMISA

Amos del Universo: Revelación, toma lugar tras la esperada batalla final entre Skeletor y He-Man, en la que, desafortunadamente, la Espada del Poder termina fracturada, la magia de Eternia se derrumba, y He-Man “muere”. Ahora, depende de Teela recuperar la Espada del Poder y salvar tanto a Eternia como al resto del Universo.

En pocas palabras, es como lo decían los fans… Es el Show de Teela.

Es más, yo ya sabía que eso iba a pasar, y no sólo porque Netflix distribuye esta serie, sino porque, como muchos fans, en el tráiler pasó un detalle que creo todos notamos, y es que…

“No estaba la canción icónica de He-Man, la del intro de los ochentas.”

En vez de eso, tenemos “I need a Hero”, que definitivamente no es una mala canción, es muy pegajosa, pero si realmente esta serie es una secuela de He-Man y los Amos del Universo, por lo menos debió incluir esta canción en algún momento, así sea un simple remix. Y fueron estos dos factores lo que me hicieron entender a dónde iría esta serie.

Antes de continuar, quiero aclarar que Amos del Universo: Revelación, para el 25 de julio, tiene cinco capítulos, pero Kevin Smith va a lanzar una segunda parte pronto. Hablando de Kevin Smith, voy a tratar de no hablar mucho de las controversias que giran en torno en su nombre, excepto que Smith nos engañó haciéndonos creer que la serie es sobre He-Man, cuando no es así.

En fin, voy a empezar con…

HISTORIA (Repito… SPOILERS)

Voy a empezar hablando de lo bueno, desde la animación.

Ésta viene de la mano de Powerhouse Animation Studios, la cual se hizo cargo de la fantástica serie de Castlevania de Netflix. Y se nota, porque la paleta de colores está muy bien balanceada, sobre todo en el Castillo de Grayskull, Snake Mountain, Subternia, y el resto de Eternia, le pusieron gran empeño a la animación. Por otro lado, las batallas suelen ser muy entretenidas, y al ver a los personajes que tanto amas, sientes que, de alguna forma, vuelves a esos días de tu infancia. Sólo miren esos hermosos planos.

Y la banda de sonora de Bear McCreary está muy genial, aunque desde luego no supera la rola clásica de He-Man de los ochentas. Nada podría.

Ahora es tiempo de lo malo; prepárense porque aquí tengo mucho que decir.

Primero, les cuento que He-Man sólo vuelve a aparecer en el episodio cuatro, y ni siquiera He-Man, solo como Adam, para que al final, Skeletor le apuñale por la espalda y se apodere de la Espada del Poder.

¡Mataron a He-Man dos veces! ¡Dos veces al hombre más poderoso del universo! No había visto una afrenta así contra un personaje querido de los ochentas y noventas desde John Connor, en Terminator: Dark Fate, o desde Luke Skywalker en Star Wars: Los Últimos Jedi.

¿Entonces por qué este poster que parece mostrar que He-Man llevará las riendas de la serie?

¡Señor Smith! Si va a hacerle esto a los fans, no se queje de que después le tiren mierda.

Segundo, la historia me pareció floja, y a veces hasta forzada. Ni yo sé por dónde empezar, pero tiene el mismo problema que la trilogía de secuelas de Star Wars: pretenden establecer una trama sin un buen trasfondo y luego esperan que la asimilemos así no más, a eso hay que agregar que parece querer destruir, o empañar, mucho del lore de la serie de los ochentas.

Trataré de explicarlo en detalle.

Como ya dije antes, en el primer episodio, tenemos la gran batalla entre He-Man y Skeletor, la cual parece que los mata a ambos; después, vemos que Teela se entera de que el Príncipe Adam es He-Man; para los que recuerdan la serie original, sólo cuatro individuos sabían de su identidad: He-Man, Sorceress, Orko, Man-At-Arms y Cringer, y en el intro de la serie, esto lo clarifican. Pero a los pocos segundos de la batalla, la Reina Marlena revela que Adam está muerto, en pocas palabras, ella también sabía del secreto de su hijo. Y yo me pregunto:

“¿A qué horas supo de esto?” “¿Quién le dijo la verdad?” “¿Man-At-Arms?”

Imposible, porque Man-At-Arms confirma que él también les oculto la verdad.

Y después vemos que Teela se pone furiosa y le reprocha a todos, incluyendo a Man-At-Arms, a quien acaban exiliando, y al propio Adam, para luego renunciar a su puesto en Grayskull y desaparecer. Eso último, para mí, no tiene sentido, pero explicaré después el por qué.

Para el capítulo dos, Teela se vuelve mercenaria, se hace con una compañera, Andra, que después hablaré de ella, y trata de alejarse de todo lo referente a la magia, mientras que es obvio que Eternia está muriendo por la ausencia de ésta. Y yo me pregunto.

“¿Cuánto tiempo ha pasado?” “¿Quién es Andra?” “¿Qué pasó con Randor y Marlena?” “¿Qué hay del pasado entre Adam y Teela?” “¿En serio Teela va a dejar morir a Eternia sólo por sus emociones?”

Mi punto es que esta serie no parece apoyarse en su predecesora para construir su trama, ni siquiera la reconoce; sólo te ponen un par de referencias a ésta y nada más, como los diseños de He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms, Sorceress y Skeletor. Pero para el capítulo dos, todo lo referente a la serie de los ochenta es casi inexistente, con excepción de un par de flashbacks con He-Man y Teela.

Pero esos flashbacks son puro relleno, no dicen nada de la relación entre Adam y Teela, ni cómo se conocieron, cómo se volvieron amigos, qué clase de confianza tenían, si en algún momento Teela le habló de lo que He-Man le inspira a Adam. Ese tipo de cosas que construyen a los personajes, cosa que considero tan importante como la historia. De hecho, si quitas esos flashbacks, no le afecta a ésta en nada.

Y tomando en cuenta que Amos del Universo: Revelación, es una secuela de He-Man, debería explorar más a los personajes y sus vínculos dentro del contexto de la serie original, especialmente por semejante decisión tan drástica que tomó Teela al final del primer capítulo.

Admito que es difícil de explicar, hasta para mí; básicamente se resume a esto – Si lo de ser secuela es una mentira, entonces crea tu propio trasfondo que justifique a los protagonistas, sobre todo a Andra y a Teela, y si no lo es, entonces desarrolla un poco el contexto de tu serie predecesora, para que se note el vínculo. Pero no pongas a Teela renunciando a su puesto en Grayskull de esa forma tan brusca porque queda muy mal. A esto me refería con lo que ser forzado.

También, el ritmo de la historia es algo lento y pesado. Y todo es culpa de Teela, por su actitud que sólo puedo calificar como pedante; el personaje, lejos de emocionarte, te exaspera, todo el tiempo se la pasa quejándose, basureando la magia, basureando a He-Man, y escapando de sus responsabilidades. De hecho, les confieso que, cuando veía los episodios, todo lo que quería era adelantarlos, o ver cuánto faltaba.

El problema de Amos del Universo: Revelación no es que se quiera centrar en Teela, el problema es que no se siente natural, es una trampa para osos, te enganchan con los posters, los trailers y las figuras de acción, pero al final, es una historia sin alma enfocada en una heroína irritante, que no sólo no te transmite carisma, sino que le lanza piedras a todo aquello que los fans queremos, como pasó con Terminator: Dark Fate, como pasó con Ghostbusters 2016, como pasó con La Trilogia de secuelas de Star Wars. ¿Si notan el patrón?

Y ya para terminar con la historia, quiero aclarar que hay escenas que están bien hechas, pero más que nada es por el diálogo, como en el capítulo tres, en donde Orko habla con Andra, y le dice que él no puede recordar las fantásticas aventuras con He-Man y sus amigos, así que le da el siguiente consejo:

“Andra, si decides volverte aventurera, llega siempre un diario y escribe todo, así sean los detalles más insignificantes, porque cuando todo termine, sólo tendrás dos cosas al final – buenos amigos y recuerdos felices.”

Esa escena se me hizo bonita. De hecho, hay más escenas así, como el encuentro entre Teela y Cringer. Pero ellas solas no mejoran la historia, ni siquiera un poco. Lamentablemente.

PERSONAJES

En general, la parte de los personajes es mejor… pero no demasiado.

Para empezar, debemos darle crédito de que los personajes de Man-At-Arms, He-Man, Adam, Cringer, Beast Man y Tri-klops conservan sus personalidades; en cuanto a Orko, creo que querían mejorarlo, cosa que no hacía falta, en mi opinión personal. Orko estaba bien como lo dejaron, pero si ese era el caso… lo arruinaron con su muerte en el episodio 4.

¿Por qué? Porque su muerte fue muy prematura. Orko casi no hace nada, y le quieren una muerte digna sin antes darle un arco o desarrollo en óptimas condiciones. Igual que con He-Man

Lo que pasó con Han Solo en El Despertar de la Fuerza, o Luke Skywalker en Los Últimos Jedi.

No obstante, Mark Hamill hace un gran trabajo como Skeletor. Hace que el personaje sea intimidante y se puede tomar en serio como amenaza, aunque a veces suena como Skeletor, y otras como el Guasón. También Tony Todd como Scare Glow está genial. El actor en sí es uno de mis favoritos, pero su voz es de lo mejor, se nota que él nació para doblar villanos.

Ahora, todos conocemos esa reputación que tiene Netflix de forzar la inclusión dentro de franquicias… a expensas de la historia. ¡Claro! Hay casos donde la inclusión la hacen bien, como con Bojack Horseman y con She-Ra y las Princesas del Poder. El problema, es que, por cada She-Ra, tenemos cinco o seis Netflix’s Death Note.

“Lo que hicieron con L (Lakeith Stainfeld) simplemente no tiene perdón. No saben cuanto odio a este L, es sin duda alguna el peor de todos.”

¿Por qué digo esto? Porque tengo una pregunta digna – ¿Quién demonios es Andra?

¡Es verdad! Ella es la compañera de Teela y una talentosa ingeniera, pero el personaje no tiene trasfondo – no se dónde viene, ni cómo conoció a Teela, ni las aventuras que vivieron. ¿Cómo pretenden que queramos a un personaje así de plano? Y si, yo sé que Andra apareció en los cómics, pero es más que claro que no es una adaptación, sobre todo porque esta Andra es de piel oscura.

Miren… Voy a decir mi opinión sobre la inclusión para el futuro… ¡Me encanta! ¡Amo la inclusión! Técnicamente yo soy de una minoría, por lo que tener personajes de distintas razas, géneros y orientación sexual es hermoso, porque eso demuestra lo variopinto y colorido que es el mundo. Pero hay una gran diferencia entre inclusión natural… E INCLUSIVIDAD FORZADA, o entre inclusividad y tokenismo.

Tokenismo es cuando pones a un personaje con una característica que es, por lo general, superficial, y lo vuelves todo en éste, lo que da como resultado algo plano y risible. Si deseas ser inclusivo en tu historia, hazlo; como ya dije, eso es muy lindo, pero asegúrate de que la raza, el género o la orientación sexual sean sólo PARTE de tus personajes; debes también incluir sus fuerzas, sus debilidades, sus traumas, sus miedos, sus sueños… Su humanidad. Y sobre todo… No ser racista con los hombres blancos heterosexuales, o con aquellos que no piensan como tú.

Perdón. Lo que quiero decir es que Andra se me hace olvidable y simplona, porque se nota que querían poner otras razas sólo porque sí, De hecho… Amber de Invencible tiene más personalidad de Andra.

Aunque he de decir que Evil-Lynn sigue siendo la villana más hipnótica y carismática, sobre todo con la voz de Lena Headey. ¡Oh! ¡Estoy enamorado!

Y ya para terminar, quiero decir que me parece una estupidez que Teela abandonara a su familia y a Eternia a su suerte por un secreto que ella pudo descubrir hace años, Es una actitud cobarde, egoísta y reprochable que sé no tiene nada que ver con la Teela con la que crecimos, especialmente porque a ella la ponen, y cito… “una guerrera letal y una formidable estratega.” Si eso fuera cierto, entonces ella hubiera sospechado de que Adam es He-Man.

Teela es una guerrera, la guardiana de Adam y se volvió Man-At-Arms, ella debería entender que hay sacrificios, riesgos, más que nada por lo que está en juego en Eternia; hay un deber que cumplir, y por eso, éste está por encima de nuestras emociones. Teela puede estar molesta, pero ni Grayskull, ni Eternia, ni el Universo tienen por qué pagar por las decisiones de cinco personas.

Además, es que su diseño a partir del capítulo 2 no me gustó mucho; especialmente su corte de cabello; no sé, pero me recuerda mucho al de Abby, en The Last of Us: Part II.

Y lo peor de todo es que ella no mejora; todo el tiempo le tira basura a la magia, a Grayskull, a Adam, aun cuando él sacrificó su vida para darle una esperanza a Eternia, siempre con esa actitud pedante. De hecho, en el capítulo 3, cuando se reencuentra con su padre, ella le reprocha por ser un cobarde que sólo piensa en él mismo. “Mira quién habla.” Y antes de Subternia, Teela menciona algo a Man-At-Arms sobre compensar el pasado, diciendo…

“…but If you want to make it all up to me…”

Que traduce en: si deseas compensarme a mí…

Lo que me llevó a pensar… ¿Qué tiene que compensarle él a Teela? Ella, lejos de ayudarle a llevar su exilio, lo abandonó a su suerte, como ya lo dije, sólo por un secreto que Teela, en su calidad de guerrera, pudo haber ido descifrando con sus habilidades. Digo, Duncan adoptó a Teela, la amo, la educó, es quien es en parte gracias a él. ¿Y así es cómo le agradece?  

Quizás esté equivocado; si alguien puede corregirme, se lo agradecería en el fondo.

CONCLUSIÓN

Amos del Universo: Revelación es una serie mediocre que no me dejó satisfecho.

Como serie de He-Man, deja mucho que desear; no tiene un trasfondo sólido, muchos de sus personajes hacen bulto, a pesar de la hermosa animación, es muy aburrida; y a pesar de las geniales, quieres que todo termine rápido. Pero como secuela de la serie ochentera, es todavía peor, no se siente esa conexión con su serie hermana, no aprovecha las posibles tramas que posee. Y lo más grave de todo…

¡¡Deja muy mal parado a He-Man!!

Yo quizás vea la Parte II, pero hasta ahí. Reitero que todo esto sólo es mi opinión. Lo cierto es que esta serie va a dividir a los fans, así como hizo Star Wars: Los Últimos Jedi.  

Si quieres verla, perfecto… Vela. Y si te gusto, te gusto. Yo respetaré eso. Pero no prometo que te deje contento.

Y para terminar, a los que no les gustó Amos del Universo: Revelación, vayan con la serie original, o si no… con el remake de 2002. ¡En mi opinión personal, es mucho!
