JAINITUOS ANIME REVIEWS – YURI ON ICE!! MY OWN IMPRESSIONS

Yuri!!! On Ice

Genre: Sports, skating, BL

Studio: MAPPA

Hello my friends. Welcome to another blog entry.

After finishing the day with a beautiful Girls Love story…

I fell more eager to start this day with a Boys Love story. And let me tell that is absolutely one of the greatest yaoi stories of history. Once more… the title says it all.

«Don’t stop us now, the moment of truth

We were born to make history.»

Yeah. We are.

But before I start, I must ask the same questions, I have to in order to start making history:

Are you guys ok? Feeling Healthy?

If the answer is yes, then I am happy.

And now… time to be born to make history. This is Yuri!!! on Ice.

PREMISE

Yuri!!! on Ice is an original anime series, produced by the always welcome Studio MAPPA, which aired between October and December 2016, in 12 episodes, directed by Sayo Yamamoto (the same director behind Lupin the Third: A woman Called Fujiko Mine). The choreography was in charge of former professional skater, Kenji Miyamoto.

23 year-old Yuri Katsuki is a very talented skater, but he is not precisely in the best moment of his career. After a lot of losses, including the Grand Prix Final, Yuri puts his career on hold and returns to his hometown in Hasetsu, Kyushu. Once there, Yuri decides to skate and perfectly imitates the beautiful routine of his idol, Russian skater Viktor Nikiforov. Unbeknownst to Yuri, his performance is recorded and becomes viral, something that indeed catches Viktor’s attention. Viktor moves to Hasetsu and catches Yuri, making himself the latter’s coach.

However, 15-year-old skating prodigy Yuri Plisetsky, discovers Viktor’s decision, travels Hasetsu and confronts him and Yuri. Now both Yuri K. and Yuri P. compete in a beautiful sets of skating matches, full of wonderful choreographies, always under the watch of Viktor.

Immediately after its released, Yuri!!! on Ice became a phenomenon, being praised by critics and professional skaters, being called as one of the best anime of 2016; while both Yuri and Viktor becoming a very renown iconic of LGBT anime, among other beautiful yaoi couples like:

Eiji and Ash; Ryoma and Izumi, and practically every couple from Given.

The opening song, History Maker, performed by Dean Fujioka, is definitely one of the best songs I have ever heard.

Furthermore, the success of Yuri!!! on Ice was so big, that in the 1st edition of the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, the series won seven awards (Anime of the Year, Best Boy, Best Opening, Best Ending, Best Animation, Best Couple, and Most Heartwarming Scene), becoming the most awarded anime of the Crunchyroll Awards, along with My Hero Academia, season 2 (with seven awards as well).

Currently, Studio MAPPA is animated a sequel movie, called Yuri on Ice The Movie: Ice Adolescence, originally scheduled to be released in 2019, but delayed constantly. (And No. the COVID-19 apparently has nothing to do with it).

Before I move forward, I will share with you a link of Dean Fujioka’s History Maker, with lyrics.

STORY

Before I continue, let me share a personal anecodte.

Back in 2017, I heard about this anime, which I heard it was a marvel, and a sensation, some even called it a beautiful masterpiece. Naturally, that anime was Yuri!!! on Ice. Everyone kept saying Yuri!!! on Ice this, Yuri!!! on Ice that. It was all over my ears. Then I said… «Give me a break. This should be some overrated trend.» You know, sometimes when people calls a movie, a tv series or a cartoon a masterpiece, only to find out it is indeed overrated and this only merit is to divide fans.

Anyone?? What a weird 2017

Then I changed my mind and thought it was the history of a singer with blueish appearance, whose singing comes across the universe.

Anyone?

The point is that I decided to watch the first episodes of Yuri!!! on Ice, and… it was nothing like I saw before. An anime of a young skater that meets a really handsome man, they start a nice friendship and participate in many skating events, with really beautiful choreographies. I might be outdated, but by 2017, I didn’t remember seeing something similar. And it was worth it.

The animation is beautiful. It is MAPPA studio after all. What else can be expected? Similar to A-1 Pictures, we will get some wonderful animation. And the story is even better. Viktor starts being very harsh with Yuri, but patient, which becomes a beautiful love story; and then when the moments of skating are indeed a spectacle. Seriously, I don’t think you will find any choreographies like those in any other anime. The animation, the music, along with the movements combine together to make an audiovisual marvel that will always age well, especially for 2017.

But from my perspective, these dances make you feel as if you were in the audience… or in the Winter Olympics. A show that brings anyone to tears. (Didn’t happened to me, but the sensation in my heart always remains fresh).

Also, the story feels pretty natural. The bond that Yuri and Viktor create feels extremely genuine, and the energy brought by Yuri P. adds for a lot of comic relief that is really hilarious.

And every episode has the same atmosphere. Nothing gets boring, so you want to see what happens next.

At the end, you understand why Yuri!!! on Ice has become so popular. But that’s not all.

CHARACTERS

I think Yuri!!! on Ice proved that, if a story is wonderful, can be mostly because of its characters.

Like I said, Yuri and Viktor are a wonderful couple, and Yuri P, despite being a brat and a force to be reckon with, is still a pretty likeable character. All make a really chemistry, ready to bring action, passion and beauty, ideal from a sweet trio.

Extra praise from Junichi Suwabe, who brings an excellent performance from Viktor.

The rest of the cast, especially the skaters, are also pretty nice. What I really love is that they become from different countries (United States, Canadá, Switzerland, South Korea, Kazakhstan), which brings more realism and culture toward the skating competitions.

Case in point, we have Seung-gil Lee.

Notice the eyes, notice the skin colour, the hair, and the side of the face. It is a beautiful contrast, the series really worked hard to make this characters a unique design, especially in comparison to Yuri Katsuki. What I mean is that, while both are from Asia, they come from different countries (Yuri is from Japan, and Seung is from South Korea), and this makes the context of Yuri!!! on Ice richer more believable.

There are other characters that I wanted to have more development though, like with Yuko Nishigori and her family.

I do not know. Perhaps it is my viewpoint, but I got the feeling that she and her family could do more in the story. It is not a disaster, but it is something I wanted to point out.

Anyone, the characters are really good.

CONCLUSION

Indeed, Yuri!!! on Ice is one of the best BL anime you can ever see. But it is more than that. It is about overcoming your limitations, good sportsmanship, friendship, hope and, of course, love. The best part is that it doesn’t need swords, violence, blood to present good conflict. Everything, from the animation to the story, is well-crafted. It is not perfect, but a beautiful series to watch.

I wish I could tell more, but, at the end, it is better to watch than to describe.

And I want to finish this entry with the following statement…

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL BISEXUALITY DAY!!!

See you around.

JAINITUOS ANIME REVIEWS – Iwakakeru – Sports Climbing Girls – First Own Impressions

Iwakakeru – Sports Climbing Girls

Genre: Sports

Studio: Blade

Hello my friends.

Welcome to another anime reviews.

Today I bring a small piece of work that brought my attention, and I decided to watch straight away, especially since summer is coming (In Australia, of course). With that said, I bring you…

But before that, I must do a VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT.

I want… to thank every single reader I got on this 2020. As of October 17, my blog has reached over 800 views for the year. I know that for many people this might not sound like a big deal, but for me… It is very important and very special, especially because I never thought my blog would grow this much. You… made it possible. My beloved readers all over the world, including Irina, Danael, Aiya, and Anketsu. All of you gave me a lot of happiness as I am trying to be as professional and honest with my entries as I can.

I wish I could give some economical pledges in exchange, because you deserve it. Perhaps I will open a Patreon account, and give some rewards.

Now. My target is to reach 1000 views for 2020. And I will obtain them with your support. Again, thanks again for your help. Thank you again.

And if you feel healthy, then I am happy.

Now, let’s go with Iwakakeru – Sport Climbing Girls.

PREMISE

Based on the manga written by Ryudei Ishizara, and published by Cygames, Iwakakeru – Sports Climbing Girls (Or Iwa-kakeru – Climbing Girls), tells the story of Konomi Kasahara, a first-year of the Hanamiya All-Girls School; a former gaming champion, Konomi is looking for a club to join in her new school. Then she finds a climbing wall and feels eager to try it despite the protest of fellow first-year student, Jun Uehara. This lead Konomi to join the Climbing Club and face amazing puzzle-like walls.

Throughout the anime, Konomi also befriends senior Climbing Club members, Sayo Yotsuba and Nonoka Sugiura. As of October 17, two episodes have been released. Iwakakeru is directed by Tetsuro Amino, famous for directing many adaptations of Macross, and recently Rainbow Days.

It is important to mention that Cygames also adapted another popular sport franchise.

Uma Musume Pretty Derby

So it was a matter of time before Cygames would release an anime about Climbing Sports. Personally, there is nothing to be surprised about, because during the last years, we have seen what I called A New Golden Age of Sports Anime, including Free!, Kuroro’s Basket, Hanebado!, Chihayafaru, How Heavy Are the Dumbbells you Lift?, and of course, the one that has become the king of sports anime now, and that is…

Trust me that I want to see Haikyu!! one day, but for now, I am going to focus in this new addition of the «Golden Age». Perhaps I am overreacting with the Golden Age thing, but I can assure you that Iwakakeru will not leave anyone indifferent.

STORY

So true!!

Despite being two episodes, I got to say that, so far, Iwakakeru has left a very good impression on me. It starts presenting itself in a similar way to How Heavy are the Dumbbells you lift?, that is, presenting our normal main protagonist in search of an activity that helps her to overcome an obstacle, in the case of Hibiki Sakura, her weight, and for Konomi, is her addiction to video games. Then both meeting their respective new best friend, for Hibiki is Akemi Soryuin, and for Konomi, is Jun Uehara. And after a couple of competitions in the gym and in the climbing walls, our characters establish a powerful friendship that will lead them to go through many adventures and challenges that will turn the adrenaline on for all of us.

And in the second episode, Konomi meets some of the rivals she will face. And as a proof of how tough things will get, I will show you one of her new rivals.

Black Widow!!

Just kidding!!! But yeah. It is a small evidence of what will come.

Anyway!

I must be honest. The first thing I thought when I saw the trailer of Iwakakeru, is that it will be some kind of Keijo!!!!!!, but with climbing sports; because there are some shots that many animegoers might consider as fanservice. But luckily, that is not the case. Instead, we have a very interesting story. It might not have the same excitement is Haikyuu!!, but definitely it is worth to check.

Also, I am a very big sports fan (Well… I come from Colombia), including cycling, tennis, volleyball, track and field, swimming, and I played soccer in my childhood. So every time I see a sports anime, it feels beautifully refreshing, because you get this emotion and excitement of athletes giving their best and sharing with you the same feelings, the speed, the endurance, the wind. Everything. During my childhood, that is what I felt with Captain Tsubasa and Slam Dunk. And that hasn’t changed.

Even Sword Art Online: Alternative Gun Gale Online awoke that same excitement for sports.

I have faith that the upcoming episodes.

Furthermore, the animation is pretty wonderful, and sometimes the colour palette gives the same vibe that you find in other Cygames anime, such as Uma Musume and Princess Connect – Re:Dive. And Studio Blade… well, it is the first time I have heard from them, but I think they got a lot of potential.

For now… nothing else to add.

CHARACTERS

I think that talking about the characters will be a bit difficult. Ok! Don’t get me wrong! Despite the feeling of waifus or fanservice that many animegoers can get, the characters have shown us a lot of identity, in both terms of design and backstory. Nonetheless, my two favourites were Konomi and Jun. I forgot to talk about the latter.

But, the second episode introduces Jun as extremely passionate about Climbing sports. Just look at her here.

Can you see the amazing happiness of her characters? The excitement? All these wonderful feelings that many of us have when we do that something we love the most. An opportunity unlike any other. Definitely Iwakakeru did a good job representing those emotions with Jun and Konomi.

But another great part of episode 2 is the way it introduces some of the rivals

CONCLUSION

Iwakakeru – Sports Climbing Girls comes a very nice addition for this final quarter of 2020 lineup, I am again looking forward to see the rest of the series, and if you are a really fan of sports, you will probably enjoy it.

I did. And I think that is what inspired Kaguya, Ruka and Uzaki-chan to do Rock Climbing.

Well… what are you waiting for? Go binge Iwakakeru – Rock Climbing Girls. And no excuses.

Or buts for that matter.
